There aren’t many rules at MobileHackDays other than the following
- This isn’t your Daddy’s Hackathon. Expect the unexpected.
- Bring your computer, extra batteries, and your charger. Extension cords will be present for you.
- FYI a camera crew will be present filming for a reality show about internet startups. If you do not wish to be filmed, let us know and we will make sure you do not appear on the show.
- Respect the location
- We prefer open source software. If you need help finding an open source license, see this page. You are not required to open source your code if you don’t want to.
- You can build any app you want, we suggest keeping the focus simple since we only have 2 days to build
- No pre-built apps, you should be building something completely new from scratch in 2 days, libraries and existing API’s OK.
- Beginners are welcome, we will have trainers and sneior developers on staff to help the noobs in our community get ramped up. We suggest that more seasoned developers welcome noobs into their teams so they can learn, so that they in turn can teach someone else how to code
- You must be 13 years or older to participate in the MobileHackDays
- Designers, Marketers, and entreprenuers are welcome
- All submitted projects will be promoted on the MobileHackDays web site at the end of the event where people will vote on which one they like the best. A hacker, designer, entreprenuer bio will be included.
- You can develop your app on any platform you like, iOS, Android, HTML5, Phonegap, Flex for Android, BlackBerry, anything.
- Event attendees will have the option to present a 2 minute presentation on their app idea and what platform they want to develop in on Friday before the hacking begins. You don’t have to present, but it helps if you want to generate interest in forming a team.
- Teams are self organizing, you will have 1-2 hours to assemble into teams, or you can work on your own if you prefer that. A schedule will be posted to help keep you on track. You do not have to present in order to build an app. You can work alone if you prefer.
- MobileHackDays staff will help you with an app idea if you don’t have one
- Closing: Presenters who have completed their app will have 5 minutes to present what they built, and then the community will vote on a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner.
- No offshore development, you likely wont have enough time to collaborate with an offshore team in 2 days anyhow.
- All applications built during the event belong to the creators, we do not have any involvement into the intellectual property rights of apps created during the event, we expect participants to sort that out on their own during the team organization phase.
- Rules & Guidelines subject to change.
Pitching
- Pitches will be limited to 5 minutes and 5 slides. You can pitch an idea for an app, a programming language or framework, or just you as an individual. You may mention a company you work with but purely company or corporate pitches will be limited to sponsors only.
Collaborating
- A public mailing list mobilehackdays@googlegroups.com is available for attendees to use during the conference for asking general questions or getting help from other teams.
- Teams are encouraged to use Google Huddle (a feature of Google Plus) for private chat rooms, you may, however, use any collaboration software you like.
- A MobileHackDaysLA Github account has been set up for teams to use as private repositories. You are not required to use Github for storing your code, it is merely available if you would like to use it. Public repositories will be created only upon special request. We will assume that you do not want to publicly share your code created during the Hackathon, although some participants may want to do this. Email us with your team members and their email addresses, the name of the repository, and we will configure it for you.
